CHAPTER 8

Oswald led us down a hallway and into a conference room that was set up for a meeting, with water glasses and folders set before the chairs.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “Is this a bad time for you?”

“It’s always a bad time for me when I need to speak to someone about the man who lost his life on a Harbor Tours dive.”

“I didn’t even know who owned the boat. We thought Olivia did,” Eleanor said.

“Did she tell you she owned the boat?” Oswald asked.

“We must have just assumed it,” I replied. “Olivia was quite upset when she found out that her husband’s body was found.”

“You must mean her brother.”

“So she was Billy’s sister. I wasn’t positive until now. I just don’t understand why Olivia made us think she was Billy’s wife.”

“You’ll have to ask her that.”

“I would if the boat was still moored where it was yesterday.”

Oswald’s eyes narrowed. “What? Please tell me you weren’t looking in the right place.”

“Oahu only has one marina, we’ve been told. We were shocked that Harbor Tours would be taking more tourists diving.”

“If that boat is gone, it has nothing to do with continuing business. Olivia stole the boat, because I told her I was canceling their tours.”

“Because of what happened to Billy?” Eleanor asked.

“Yes. This is a serious problem. I don’t need to get sued because Olivia and Billy aren’t making sure their tour is safe. Granted, I’m upset that Billy died, but this isn’t the first mistake they’ve made. Last time it was leaving a diver behind.”

“I believe I heard about that. What do you think about Billy?”

“Billy is a good man, or was. I trusted him, but I became concerned when complaints began piling up on my desk.”

“That’s hardly your concern when you weren’t running the tour.”

“It’s still my boat, and I have a good name to uphold.”

“So what do you think of Olivia?”

“I don’t like the woman personally. I wish I had never allowed Billy to convince me that having his sister on board would be a good thing. I was confident that Billy could handle the business, but ever since Olivia joined him there have been problems. Billy wasn’t on board when that diver was left behind.”

“Who was the tour guide that day?” Eleanor asked.

“Sissy Mamaloo. She’s a good diver, but Olivia had too many tourists on the boat that day. You can’t do a dive with only one guide in the water.”

“What do you plan on doing about your boat now?” I asked.

“I’ll call the police.”

“I mean what will you use the boat for now that you’ve canceled the contract with Harbor Tours?”

“I haven’t given that much thought. Are you in the market for a boat?”

I laughed. “If I were it wouldn’t be for a boat that size.”

“I must admit I wasn’t sure how much work having a boat like that is. At the time it was a worthwhile investment, but now I’m not so sure.”

“I’m sure someone would love to buy the boat and start their own tour,” Eleanor said.
